5 Most Unusual Places to Visit in Florida
Florida is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the US. It is known for its beautiful beaches, theme parks, and relaxed lifestyle. However, there are also many hidden gems and unusual attractions to be found in Florida. Here are 5 of the most unusual places to visit in Florida:
- Cassadaga
Cassadaga is a small community about an hour north of Orlando that is known as the “Psychic Capital of the World.” The community was founded in 1875 by a trance medium named George P. Colby, who believed that he was directed by a Native American spirit guide to set up a spiritualist camp in the area. Today, Cassadaga is home to a number of psychic readings, spiritualist churches, and other New Age businesses.
- Tallahassee’s Komodo Dragon Sculpture
This sculpture is located in the Guyte P. McCord Park in Tallahassee. It was created by sculptor W. Stanley “Sandy” Proctor, who is best known for his Bobby Bowden sculpture at Doak Campbell Stadium. The Komodo Dragon is not native to Florida, so it is not clear why the sculpture was created.
- The Coral Castle
This unusual structure was built by a 5-foot-tall Latvian named Ed Leedskalnin over a period of 20 years. The Coral Castle is made out of about 1,000 tons of coral rock, and it is not fully understood how Leedskalnin was able to build it without the aid of modern construction equipment.
- Spook Hill
This fascinating optical illusion can be found in Lake Wales, about an hour east of Tampa. When you park your car at the bottom of the hill, it will appear to roll uphill. There are a number of different theories about what causes this illusion, but the most likely explanation is that it is caused by the way that the horizon is distorted.
- Devil’s Millhopper Geological State Park
This hidden gem is located in Gainesville. It is a 120-foot sinkhole that includes a mini-rainforest, small waterfalls, and lush foliage. Visitors can hike down into the sinkhole to explore this natural wonder. These are just a few of the many unusual places to visit in Florida. If you are looking for an off-the-beaten-path adventure, be sure to check out some of these unique attractions.
