National Drive-Thru Day: Avoiding the “Fender-Bender” Trap

National Drive-Thru Day: Avoiding the “Fender-Bender” Trap
July 24 is “National Drive-Thru Day.” It’s a celebration of the ultimate American convenience. But from an insurance adjuster’s perspective, the drive-thru and its surrounding parking lot are actually “high-risk zones.”
The Low-Speed, High-Frequency Trap
Most people are incredibly careful on the highway, but they drop their guard the moment they pull into a parking lot or a drive-thru lane. This is where “fender-bender” season happens—backing into other cars, clipping poles, or misjudging the turning radius in a tight lane. These accidents are almost always considered at-fault.
The “Drive-Thru” Defensive Strategy
- Maintain Buffer Zones: Even in a line, don’t ride the bumper of the car in front of you. Keep enough space to maneuver if the car in front stalls.
- Avoid “Multi-Tasking”: The drive-thru is the most common place for people to get distracted by their phone or their food/drink the moment they get it. Wait until you have exited the lot before unwrapping that sandwich or checking your GPS.
- Understand “Parking Lot” Liability: Remember that insurance companies often treat parking lot accidents as “shared fault” if both vehicles were in motion. Your best defense is total awareness—even when you’re just grabbing lunch.
