Caring for the Caregivers: National Nurses Week and Professional Auto Discounts

May 6–12, 2026, is National Nurses Week. It’s a time to honor the incredible dedication of the nearly 4.5 million registered nurses in the U.S. who keep our healthcare system running. At the insurance agency, we see the “behind-the-scenes” of a nurse’s life—the 12-hour shifts, the late-night commutes, and the high-stress environments. Because of the unique nature of their work, many nurses are eligible for specialized Auto Insurance benefits that they often forget to claim.

The “Affinity” Discount

Insurance companies love nurses. Statistically, healthcare professionals are viewed as more responsible, detail-oriented, and risk-averse—traits that make for excellent drivers. Many major carriers offer “Occupational” or “Affinity” discounts specifically for RNs, LPNs, and NPs. If you haven’t updated your “Employment” status on your policy lately, you could be missing out on a 5% to 12% discount just for being part of the profession.

The Commute Factor

Nurses often travel at “off-peak” hours—think 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM. While this avoids traditional rush-hour traffic, it increases the risk of “Drowsy Driving” or encountering wildlife on the road. This makes two coverages particularly important:

  • Comprehensive Coverage: Since nurses often drive during dawn and dusk (peak deer activity hours), having a low comprehensive deductible ensures that a wildlife strike doesn’t result in a huge out-of-pocket expense.
  • Medical Payments (MedPay): This provides immediate coverage for medical bills for you and your passengers, regardless of who is at fault. For someone who spends all day navigating medical billing for others, having a “no-hassle” medical coverage on their own car is a huge relief.

A Message to Our Nurses

This week, we encourage every nurse to take five minutes to call their agent. Check for those professional discounts, verify your annual mileage (which may be lower if you only work 3 days a week!), and ensure your coverage is as resilient as you are. You take care of our families; let us make sure your car insurance takes care of yours.
