It’s Time for Dad to get a New Grill When…

Dad’s are often notorious for putting others first. Dad’s will nurse a car along well past its useful life, use hand tools that are generations old and often have socks older than their children. Dad’s would rather see others in the family have the better car and more up-to-date clothes. This can be to their own detriment, especially when it comes to outdoor grills. While an outdoor grill could be considered a family appliance, Dad’s usually think about them as a part of their own domain. There is a point however, when it’s time for a new grill. You know it’s time to get Dad a new grill when…

He no longer has hair on his hands and arms.

Many older grills have lost the ability to “self-ignite” at the push of a button. This means Dad may have to resort to a lighter or matches. Now, if he is extra cautious, he will use long fireplace matches or an extended lighter, but then again, he is Dad. Even if he does, a buildup of propane can occur before ignition. In the time it takes to say “whoosh”, the flames will ignite, often making any close in proximity body hair a casualty. This is not exactly what they have in mind when they say “thrill of the grill.”

Everything is cooked crispy-rare.

Grilling on a outdated grill is more a battle than culinary experience. Unpredictable temperature settings, volcanic-type flare ups and uneven heat can make even grilling hamburgers quite the challenge. This often results in food that is crispy-rare, consisting of a nice charred exterior and a pinkish inside. Yummo.

Everyone on the block is aware Dad is grilling out.

Vintage grills have layers of barbecue sauce, marinade and juices cooked into them. They’ll often have bits and pieces of various meats, fish and pork mixed into the coals. This frequently produces smoke that is abundant, thick, and fragrant. The fire department may or may not make an appearance.

Grills that are properly cleaned and maintained can last longer than most people realize. They, however, are rarely designed for as long as Dad may want to keep them in service. Take a good look at your Dad’s grill. Odds are he may benefit from a new one. At least get him some extended matches.
