What a Walk Around Your Home Can Tell You

What a Walk Around Your Home Can Tell You

Homeowners often uncover problems by accident. There’s a wet spot under the sink, the lights flicker, or we discover a crack in a window. When it comes to your home’s exterior, it can pay to be more proactive. Here’s what a walk around your house may uncover:

Roof Damage

Check for loose, cracking, or bubbling shingles. It could be time for some repairs. If your roof is over 15 years old, it may be nearing the end of its lifespan, especially if it is a standard asphalt shingle roof.

Cracking Cement

A cracking sidewalk or driveway could be a hazard. It also could be a sign of a deeper problem, like poor drainage or a shifting foundation. Cracks should be sealed with a caulk designed for concrete.

Gutter Problems

If gutters aren’t hanging properly, appear to be full, or even have small vegetation coming out of them, they need immediate attention. Gutters protect your roof, the eaves, siding, and your foundation. They should not be overlooked.

Foundation

Inspect your foundation for cracks or other signs of settling. Foundation issues are often caused by poor drainage.

Doors and Windows

Of course, you want to inspect windows for any cracks or missing or damaged seals. Check to make sure they are not developing gaps between the window frames and the siding.

Insect Damage

Your walk-around inspection should also include looking for insect or creature damage or nesting. Remove nests and seal gaps where insects may be entering. While you are at it, inspect wood for moisture damage.

Garage Door

Does your garage door open and close smoothly? Have springs and rollers been lubricated? Does the rubber seal at the garage door bottom provide a good seal against weather and pests?

Trees and Outbuildings

This is a good time to make sure limbs are not touching or reaching over your roof, that outbuildings are issue-free, and to make sure fences are solid.

Finally, check items like paint or siding condition, outdoor faucets and sockets, and any outdoor lighting. This may also be a good time for a home insurance policy review and price quote.
