The Spookiest Part of Halloween

Gosh, what would you give to go back and do it all over again? Remember when life was carefree? As children, we simply indulge with a free spirit that which accompanies Halloween. Our imaginations run wild as we decide what/whom we wish to dress up as for the day. The idea of an abundance of candy makes our mouths water. We are smiling ear to ear as excitement overwhelms us.

Gee, if only they knew. As adults, we become worry warts. We must be superheroes–only not in costume, but in real life. It’s our job to ensure the utmost safety for our children and all of their friends. That pure bliss that comes with the sugar high on Halloween is gone–replaced only with subtle concern. There are a number of things that could go wrong on Halloween. By raising your awareness, you’re on your way to Halloween safety.

Tonight, what kinds of steps should we take towards a safe, fun-filled Halloween?

  • Sit down with your children and discuss rules. Make sure they are fully aware of your expectations of them and the consequences should they ignore your requests.
  • Younger kids should always be accompanied by an adult.
  • Set a specific time which your children should arrive home (if you feel they are old enough to go without an adult).
  • The importance of kidnapping prevention should be stressed. Make sure they are fully aware that they shouldn’t go into a stranger’s home or car.
  • Masks can make it hard for your child to see, which could cause an injury.
  • Reflective tape, glow sticks, flashlights, whatever helps them to be seen. This is essential to your kids’ costumes–it will make motorists aware of them.
  • Make sure they know the possible dangers of the candy. As you know, check candy to be sure it has not been tampered with before they ingest.
  • Remind them to look both ways before crossing the street.
  • If your children do not have their own cellular device, allow them one for the group to have communication.
