Woodstock: More Than Just Music

Woodstock: More Than Just Music

The Woodstock Music & Arts Festival, held in 1969, is one of the most legendary music events in history. However, there are many fascinating facts about Woodstock that even die-hard fans may not know.

1. Ticket Prices

The original ticket price for Woodstock was $18. This would be equivalent to about $150 in today’s dollars. Despite the high price, over 400,000 people attended the festival.

2. Jimi Hendrix’s Late Arrival

Jimi Hendrix was one of the headliners at Woodstock, but he didn’t take the stage until Monday morning at 9 AM. By that time, most of the crowd had already left.

3. Richie Havens’ Extended Set

Richie Havens opened the festival and played a much longer set than originally planned due to delays in other acts arriving. He famously improvised a new song called “Freedom” during his set.

4. Arrests and Drug Use

Despite the peaceful image of Woodstock, there were arrests made at the festival. Most of the arrests were for drug possession, primarily for marijuana.

5. Granola’s Rise to Fame

Due to food shortages at the festival, granola became a popular snack among attendees. Granola’s popularity has only grown since then.

6. Notable No-Shows

Several bands that were originally scheduled to perform at Woodstock ended up canceling or not showing up. These bands included Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Rod Stewart, Iron Butterfly, and Chicago.

7. Visiting the Woodstock Site

You can still visit the site of the Woodstock Music Festival in Bethel, New York. The Bethel Woods Center for the Arts is located on the grounds and offers a museum, concert venue, and memorial sculpture.

Woodstock: A Lasting Legacy

The Woodstock Music Festival was more than just a concert. It was a cultural phenomenon that captured the spirit of a generation. The festival’s impact can still be felt today, and it continues to inspire people around the world.
